[History]
The Japan Approvals Institute for Telecommunications Equipment (JATE) was established in March 1984 and licensed by the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications (currently Minister of Public Management, Home Affairs, Posts and Telecommunications) to promptly provide Technical Conditions regulatory compliance certifications for telecommunications terminal equipment.
In April 1985, with the enforcement of the Telecommunications Business Law, JATE was designated as a Technical Conditions certification body by the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, and began its certification activities. (April 8th 1985)
Then, the scope of certification was expanded with the establishment of the Technical Requirements, specified by Telecommunication carriers. (April 10th 1985)

[Purpose]
JATE provides Technical Conditions compliance certifications for Telecommunications terminal equipment. It promotes the development, standardization, and reliability of telecommunications systems and smooth installations of terminal equipment. The organization has been contributing to the development of telecommunications systems.

1. Telecommunications Business Law - Technical Conditions compliance certification
2. Telecommunication Business Law - Technical Requirements compliance certification
3. Measurement of required data for terminal equipment application for compliance certification
4. Research concerning certifications
5. Information Security Management System (ISMS) and telecommunications security/reliability assessment and registration.
6. Activities related to previous items 1 - 5
7. Other activities in accordance with JATE's objectives.

[Main Activities]
1 Technical Conditions compliance and design compliance certification
The Technical Conditions compliance and design compliance certification ensures that telephone network equipment, wireless calling equipment, ISDN or leased line equipment comply with the Technical Conditions (Terminal Equipment Regulations) established by the Minister of Public Management, Home Affairs, Posts and Telecommunications.

2 Technical Requirements compliance certification
The Technical Requirements compliance certification ensures that wireless calling equipment, leased line and other telecommunication equipment comply with the Technical Requirements established by telecommunication carriers authorized by the Minister of Public Management, Home Affairs,Posts and Telecommunications.

3 Terminal equipment testing services
A testing service to measure the general electrical characteristics required for a Technical Conditions compliance application, or to verify the quality of the communication, is provided upon request.

4 Announcement of certified equipment, and certification system related information (government newsletter, JATE's home page)

2)Announcements of certification procedures and publication of documents for certifications, such as application file examples.
